Why it received this score

Hellraiser arrives from 1987 with the confidence of a film that has nothing to prove and no one to please. Clive Barker, directing for the first time and adapting his own novella The Hellbound Heart, built the thing for under a million dollars, and it returned thirty times that. The plot concerns a puzzle box, a hedonist named Frank Cotton, his brother's wife Julia, and the Cenobites, extra-dimensional beings who have lost the ability to separate pain from pleasure. Frank wants a body. Julia wants Frank. Their niece Kirsty wants to survive the house. It is a domestic drama with hooks in it.

The leather, the piercings, and the ritualized suffering come straight from the underground clubs Barker frequented, and they function as design, not argument. Nothing here lectures. No character pauses to explain what the audience ought to think about appetite, obsession, or the moral standing of sensation. Kirsty is resourceful and survives on her wits, though the screenplay never bothers to make a case about her gender, and the cast is white in the unselfconscious manner of British independent cinema of the period. The body horror, meanwhile, is devoted to dismemberment and flaying, which is not a wellness position.

The ledger, examined closely, comes back empty. There is no economic critique in the house, no environmental anxiety, no historical revision, no clinical vocabulary for the mind's variations. What remains is craft: the Lament Configuration, the lighting, Christopher Young's score, and Doug Bradley's Pinhead, who speaks with the calm of a bureaucrat filing paperwork. The 2022 reimagining would find more to say about all of it. The original simply opens a door and lets something through, and then declines to explain itself. We are left with a film about appetite that makes no claims about how anyone should live. Refreshing, in its way. Also wet, and loud, and full of chains.
