Why it received this score

A group of robbers, a truckload of illegally dumped toxic waste, and a tunnel with very bad timing. Daylight arrived in December of 1996 with a premise that fits on a napkin and a star who could carry it. Rob Cohen directs Sylvester Stallone as Kit Latura, a former EMS chief now driving a taxi, who enters the collapsing Hudson River tunnel because nobody else will. The film wants nothing from us but our attention for a while. The toxic waste is a fuse, not a sermon. Illegal dumping functions here as a plot mechanism, and at no point does the film pause to indict the industry that produced the barrels.

The human material is similarly unadorned. Amy Brenneman plays Maddy Thompson, a struggling playwright with opinions and a survival instinct. Around her sit a bus of juvenile offenders, a vacationing family, an elderly couple, their dog Cooper, and a police officer named George Tyrell who finishes the film with a broken neck but no monologue. Minority performers appear in this ensemble and are permitted to exist. Nobody announces an identity. Nobody explains what they represent. The emotional summit involves a man handing a bracelet to a woman in a crowd, and a dog hauled out of the water by the collar.

Contemporary reviews were unimpressed. Ebert called it the cinematic equivalent of a golden oldies station. He was right, and that is the point. The film's governing belief is that tunnels should be escaped and that competence is heroic. There is no climate lament buried in the waste barrels, no reckoning with the men who ordered them moved, no reading of Maddy's agency as political, no commentary on the body, no neurodivergent arc, no revision of anything that ever happened. It is a clean specimen of its era. The classification is straightforward, and the file closes quietly.
