Why it received this score

The Specialist is a 1994 Miami revenge thriller in which Sylvester Stallone plays a retired CIA explosives man and Sharon Stone plays the woman who hires him to kill the gangsters who murdered her parents. It is loosely based on a series of novels, opened at number one, and later collected Razzie awards with the enthusiasm of a film that knew exactly what it was. Its cultural sensibilities, however, are thin. The cast is mostly white, with Latino performers filling out the Cuban organized-crime backdrop because the story is set in Miami. That is geography, not a casting mission. There is no LGBTQ+ content, no environmental theme, no economic critique, no body-positivity message, no neurodivergent character, and no revisionist history. The film is a machine for explosions, not a vehicle for social instruction.

Stone's character does drive the revenge plot, and she displays a certain agency in the early going. The production history suggests that agency was softened, with the screenplay revisions turning her into more of a victim. What remains is a conventional gender arrangement: the male expert and the female client, the male rescuer and the woman in peril. The Cuban gangsters provide ethnic texture, but the film never pauses to examine race or power. It simply uses the setting as atmosphere. There is no sermon here, no lecture, no attempt to educate the audience about contemporary social questions. The film wants to be a neo-noir action piece, and it succeeds at being one in the way a sledgehammer succeeds at being a hammer.

The result is a time capsule of pre-2010 action cinema, complete with Stallone, Stone, James Woods, and a Gloria Estefan song that had a longer cultural half-life than the movie. Its progressive content is negligible. A few Latino faces in supporting roles and a female protagonist with partial agency do not amount to a program. The Specialist is neither offensive nor enlightened. It is merely indifferent to the cultural conversations that would later consume the industry. In the ledger of social consciousness, it registers as a faint entry, then vanishes in the smoke.
