Why it received this score

Norman Jewison's Only You arrives from 1994 with the confidence of a film that has no interest in instructing anyone about anything. Marisa Tomei plays a Catholic schoolteacher convinced that a Ouija board and a carnival fortune teller assigned her a soulmate named Damon Bradley. Ten days before her wedding to a podiatrist, she flies to Italy to find him, trailed by her sister-in-law Kate, who has just walked out on Faith's brother. What follows is Venice, Rome, Positano, glamorous hotels, and a chain of mistaken identities. Roger Ebert admired it for shedding the baggage of a realistic, cynical age. That admiration is the thesis of the picture.

The cast is white, generically so, with Joaquim de Almeida and Antonia Rey supplying a businessman and a fortune teller as decorative texture. No assembly appears organized around a social purpose. Race goes unmentioned and largely unpopulated. The gender politics are equally antique. Faith's arc consists of chasing a man destiny allegedly chose for her, concluding with a kiss in an airport while strangers applaud. Kate's unhappiness in Pittsburgh is a comic premise, not a complaint. Nobody here asks to be taken seriously, and the film returns the favor.

The remaining categories of modern concern are absent. No environmental sermon. No class critique of the five-star establishments on display. No engagement with body image, neurodivergence, or the rewriting of history. The production luxuriates in wealth and scenery without apology, and offers no lecture at all, which is precisely what Ebert found endangered. We are left to classify a film that resists classification, a relic of lighter moods. Score it as we may, it floats off like a gondola.
