Why it received this score

Fausto Brizzi's 2011 comedy arrives as the second entry in a dilogy, following Men vs Women the previous year. Three couplings share the running time: a long-married pair undone by a lost memory, a concierge and his friend chasing a Beatles tribute band while their partners object, and a divorced couple who perform domestic harmony for the convenience of others. The organizing conceit is a war between the sexes, fought with the weary inevitability of a holiday dinner argument that nobody remembers starting. Nobody wins. Nobody is meant to.

On the cultural ledger, this film is close to blank. The cast is uniformly Italian, drawn from the familiar faces of RAI-funded comedy, with no gesture toward broader representation. There are no queer characters, no racial inquiry, no environmental anxiety, no economic grievance, no celebration of bodies outside the conventional range, no neurodivergent interiority. The battle of the sexes is played for farce, and the resolution, insofar as one exists, returns the couples to their comfortable arrangements. A viewer arriving in search of a manifesto will find only punchlines and a well-timed shrug.

What the film offers instead is craftsmanship of a modest, agreeable sort. Bisio and Littizzetto do their reliable work, the comic timing is polished, and the structure sags in the middle as anthology comedies tend to do. There is no sermon here, no raised finger, no lecture delivered from the pulpit of contemporary virtue. It concerns husbands and wives being irritating to each other, which is an old subject and a durable one. We classify it accordingly, note the absence of any social instruction, and move on to the next screening.
