Consciousness Markers

💰
Eat the Rich35

The group's project is explicitly anti-bourgeois, mocking respectable society and its 'cult of aimless, non-creative' intellect, though the target is social conformity rather than capitalism as an economic system.

📢
Lecture Energy15

The film gestures at a thesis about society's stifling of authentic expression, but it delivers this through abrasive provocation and Dogme-style experimentation rather than earnest moralizing.

👑
Feminist Agenda10

Karen and Susanne are given substantial interiority, but the film's concerns are anti-bourgeois provocation and grief, not a feminist critique of patriarchy.

🎭
Representation Casting0

The cast is entirely white Danish actors, and the disabled characters are performed by non-disabled actors as a provocation rather than any inclusive casting effort.

🏳️‍🌈
LGBTQ+ Themes0

No LGBTQ+ characters or themes appear; the group sex and romantic pairings are exclusively heterosexual.

✊
Racial Consciousness0

Race is entirely absent from this homogeneously white Danish production.

🌱
Climate Crusade0

No environmental or climate themes whatsoever.

💗
Body Positivity0

The film's treatment of disability is the opposite of body positivity, drawing widespread condemnation for its mocking appropriation of disabled behavior.

🧠
Neurodivergence0

Mental disability is simulated as a transgressive game rather than explored as affirming neurodivergent identity; the film was criticized precisely for this.

📖

Why it received this score

Lars von Trier's second entry in the Dogme 95 canon arrives with the confidence of a man who read the manifesto and treated it as a dare. A troupe of able-bodied Danes spend their afternoons performing mental incompetence in restaurants, a practice they call spassing, in order to unsettle the bourgeoisie. The camera shakes, the digital grain glows, and everyone involved seems certain they are committing an act of courage.

Regard the politics closely and the cupboard is bare. The cast is uniformly white and Nordic. The romantic entanglements are strictly heterosexual. Disability is not represented but worn as a costume, a decision that drew condemnation at Cannes and prompted an Ofcom inquiry when Channel 4 broadcast it years later. Nothing here resembles inclusive casting, and nothing suggests any curiosity about the inner life of the disabled. The disabled are a prop, and the joke lands on the audience for flinching.

The group's rebellion aims at conformity, at the stifling respectability of the Danish middle class, not at capital or its machinery. The targets are smugness and boredom. Karen and Susanne are granted real interiority, and the closing scene, in which Karen dribbles her food at her husband's table and receives a slap for it, carries genuine weight. But von Trier is too busy being provocative to moralize, and the film argues its case through shock and Dogme austerity, not sermon. Twenty-five years on, it reads as a period piece: abrasive, self-satisfied, and largely free of the social consciousness it imagines it possesses.

Synopsis

A group of perfectly intelligent young people decide to react to society's cult of aimless, non-creative and non-responsible form intellect by living together in a community of 'idiots'. Their primary activity becomes going out into the world of 'normal' people and pretending to be mentally incompetent. They take advantage of this situation to create anarchy, and, by every possible means, to make those around them miserable.
