Why it received this score

Michel Gondry, a director once known for whimsical dream-logic, here applies his talents to a 1930s radio serial about a newspaper heir who fights crime in a green mask. The result is a buddy comedy with cars, explosions, and Seth Rogen performing his established persona at volume. Jay Chou handles the martial arts and the coffee. Cameron Diaz is the secretary. Christoph Waltz, a recent Oscar winner, plays a Russian gangster who worries about his brand. It is a January release, and it knows it.

The film's social consciousness is, by any modern measure, negligible, and this appears to be a deliberate choice. The protagonist inherits the largest newspaper fortune in Los Angeles and uses it to buy gadgets; nobody suggests he should give the money back. Lenore Case types, researches, and becomes a romantic prize contested by two men. No character pauses to interrogate the arrangement. Kato's skill is treated as a fact of the plot, not a subject for commentary, which was also true of the source material and of Bruce Lee before him. The villain is a gangster, the crime is organized, and the resolution involves driving a car off a building.

There is no sermon here, no lecture, no moment where the audience is instructed on how to feel about the world beyond the screen. This is a $120 million studio product about a rich man and his employee who beat up criminals in a car that gets destroyed 26 times during production. It is loud, it is silly, and it asks nothing of us. In the taxonomy of cultural instruction, the film scores zero across every category we maintain, and it seems almost proud of that. The Green Hornet is not a text. It is a Saturday afternoon, and it grossed $227.8 million being one.
