Why it received this score

Say Anything... arrives from 1989, a year when a young man could stand beneath a bedroom window holding a boombox and call it courtship. Cameron Crowe's debut concerns Lloyd Dobler, a kickboxer of no fixed ambition, and Diane Court, a valedictorian bound for a fellowship in England. They fall in love. Her father, who has been stealing from the elderly residents of his retirement home, disapproves. That is the entire architecture of the thing, and it holds up well enough on its own terms.

We searched the film for contemporary social signifiers and found the shelves bare. The cast is uniformly white, and no effort was made to arrange it otherwise. There are no queer characters. Race is never raised as a subject. The climate goes unmentioned. Diane is intelligent and driven, which is admirable, but the film treats her ambition as a plot obstacle inside a romance, not as a thesis about women in the world. Jim Court's embezzlement is the crime of one greedy father, and the film has no interest in indicting the economic order that produced him. Nobody lectures. Nobody is asked to check a privilege. The movie simply wants to know whether these two will make it.

This leaves us with a rarity: a well-regarded film that registers nothing across our entire apparatus. There is no concealed messaging to excavate, no sermon buried in the third act. The boombox is just a boombox. We note the soundtrack, the pen, the nine-month sentence, and we move on, our instruments idle, our ledger clean.
