🎭
Representation Casting8

The cast is overwhelmingly white, with Kenan Thompson as the only notable non-white performer in a minor comedic role; no deliberate diversity casting is evident.

🏳️‍🌈
LGBTQ+ Themes5

A running gag has Lisa briefly believing Tom is gay, but this is a misunderstanding played for laughs rather than any genuine LGBTQ+ theme or representation.

👑
Feminist Agenda0

The film trades in 2000s raunch-comedy objectification, including a scene where a woman asks Tom to feel her breasts; it is the opposite of a feminist text.

✊
Racial Consciousness0

No engagement with race or racial themes whatsoever; characters exist without any racial commentary.

🌱
Climate Crusade0

No environmental or climate content of any kind.

💰
Eat the Rich0

The film's only economic dynamic is a workplace promotion subplot, with no critique of capitalism or wealth.

💗
Body Positivity0

No body-positivity messaging; the humor relies on conventional objectification instead.

No neurodivergent characters or themes are present.

📖
Revisionist History0

A contemporary screwball comedy with no historical subject matter to revise.

📢
Lecture Energy0

Why it received this score

My Boss's Daughter arrives from 2003, which is to say from the far side of a cultural river we have since crossed. David Zucker, a man who once helped invent the modern spoof, directs Ashton Kutcher through a screwball premise involving house-sitting, an owl named O-J, a bag of flour mistaken for narcotics, and a boss's daughter who exists chiefly as a destination. The machinery is ancient and the jokes are loud. A depressed bird, a grave, a safe, a coma: these are the ingredients. None of it is built to instruct anyone in anything.

For the purposes of our ledger, the film is nearly barren. There is no racial commentary, no environmental conscience, no economic critique, no interest in bodies beyond their conventional deployment, and no neurodivergent interiority on offer. The one non-white performer of note, Kenan Thompson, appears briefly as a cheating boyfriend and is given nothing to do with the fact of his casting. A running gag allows the heroine to believe the hero is gay, a misunderstanding milked for a laugh and then abandoned. This is not representation. It is a punchline wearing a costume.

What remains is a raunch comedy that critics met with open contempt. Seven percent on the aggregator. Three Razzie nominations. An $18 million gross against a $14 million budget. The film lectures no one, which is its single virtue and also its emptiness. It has nothing to say and says it at volume. We file it accordingly, under the heading of harmless, and turn to the next specimen.
