Why it received this score
A remake of a 1965 film, itself drawn from Elleston Trevor's novel, Flight of the Phoenix arrives with the sobering distinction of being a box-office bomb that critics found indistinguishable from its predecessor. The premise is sturdy: a cargo plane goes down in the Gobi Desert, and a group of oil workers must rebuild it from the wreckage before the water runs out. What the film offers is sand, shouting, and Dennis Quaid squinting into the middle distance. There is a certain grim satisfaction in watching a studio spend a fortune on dune groomers only to produce a film that Roger Ebert received with a shrug.
The cast is modestly diverse, with Tyrese Gibson, Sticky Fingaz, Jacob Vargas, and Kevork Malikyan filling out the ensemble. Their presence is unremarked, folded into the survival scenario without commentary, which is to say the film treats them as men who need water rather than as statements. Miranda Otto appears as a rig supervisor in a male-dominated camp, though the film makes no argument on her behalf and mostly needs her to stand near the engine. Giovanni Ribisi's Elliott is insufferable by design, a model-aircraft enthusiast masquerading as an aeronautical engineer, and the film's contempt for him is entirely structural. No social issue is engaged, no system is indicted, no lesson is delivered. The Amacore corporation exists to be abandoned, not critiqued.
What remains is a lean survival picture with a plane that improbably flies and a montage of happy endings that borders on the sentimental. It is a film about men, sand, and a stolen watch. The cultural awareness on display is minimal, and the film seems content with that. It asks nothing of its audience beyond patience and a tolerance for dust.

Synopsis
When an oil rig in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia proves unproductive, an aircraft crew are sent to shut the operation down and fly them out. On the flight out over the desert on the way to Beijing, Capt. Frank Towns and co-pilot A.J. are unable to keep their cargo plane, a C-119 Flying Boxcar, in the air when a violent sandstorm strikes. Crash-landing in a remote uncharted part of the desert, the two pilots and their passengers -- a crew of oil workers and a drifter -- must work together to survive by rebuilding the aircraft. Soon, low supplies and a band of merciless smugglers add even greater urgency to their task.
