Consciousness Markers

🎭
Representation Casting30

The cast includes Elliot Knight as hydrologist Ward Phillips and Q'orianka Kilcher as Mayor Tooma, giving the rural New England setting a modestly multiracial population, though the film never comments on this and the leads remain a white family.

💰
Eat the Rich15

The family flees 'the hustle of the 21st century,' a dam-development company looms over the land, and Tommy Chong's hippie squatter Ezra offers a mild anti-modernist counterpoint, but none of this is developed into a critique.

👑
Feminist Agenda12

Lavinia is a self-possessed teenage Wiccan who performs her own blood ritual, and Theresa is a businesswoman, but these are character traits rather than any articulated feminist argument.

🌱
Climate Crusade12

The hydrologist surveying land for a dam and the poisoned, life-draining groundwater give the film faint environmental undertones, but the Color is a cosmic entity, not a climate parable.

📢
Lecture Energy5

The film is cosmic horror and spectacle rather than sermon; it offers no moralizing monologue or didactic messaging.

🏳️‍🌈
LGBTQ+ Themes0

There are no LGBTQ+ characters, relationships, or themes anywhere in the film.

✊
Racial Consciousness0

The film engages no racial themes, history, or commentary whatsoever; the diverse casting is incidental to a cosmic-horror plot.

💗
Body Positivity0

The film features grotesque body horror and mutation, and Theresa's mastectomy is a plot detail, but there is no body-positivity messaging of any kind.

🧠
Neurodivergence0

No neurodivergent characters or themes are present; the family's unraveling is caused by alien contamination, not framed as neurodivergence.

📖
Revisionist History0

The film is a straightforward Lovecraft adaptation with no historical revisionism.

Why it received this score

Richard Stanley's Color Out of Space arrives with the gravity of a man returning from a long exile, which he is, and he applies himself to Lovecraft's least adaptable story with a farmer's patience. The Gardner family relocates to a New England farmstead to escape the twenty-first century. A meteor lands. The land begins to drink them. What follows is mutation, madness, and a great deal of screaming in the rain. The film is spectacle first and argument almost never.

On representation, the film casts Elliot Knight as the hydrologist Ward Phillips and Q'orianka Kilcher as Mayor Tooma, populating rural Arkham with faces the genre usually keeps at the margins. The film never remarks on this, which is to its credit and also the limit of its ambition. The women fare similarly. Lavinia is a teenage Wiccan who cuts her own palm for a ritual. Theresa runs a business and has survived a mastectomy. Neither fact is pressed into service as a thesis. A hydrologist surveys the land for a dam, the groundwater turns oily and wrong, and we can detect the faintest environmental hum beneath the cosmic static. Tommy Chong squats on the property as a hippie holdout against modernity, which is as close as the film comes to a position on capital. It does not get closer.

The body horror is abundant and the body positivity is absent, which is the correct arrangement for a film about a colour that eats alpacas. No character is neurodivergent, no history is revised, no sermon is delivered. The family's dissolution is caused by an alien infection, not by society, and the film lets the universe be indifferent. That indifference is the real subject here, and it is a relief. The Color is not a metaphor for our times. It is a colour, and it wants nothing. We leave the theatre unsettled and unlectured, which in this climate counts as a small mercy.

Synopsis

The Gardner family moves to a remote farmstead in rural New England to escape the hustle of the 21st century. They are busy adapting to their new life when a meteorite crashes into their front yard, melts into the earth, and infects both the land and the properties of space-time with a strange, otherworldly colour. To their horror, the family discovers this alien force is gradually mutating every life form that it touches—including them.
