Why it received this score

The 2006 edition of When a Stranger Calls arrives as a remake nobody requested, and it conducts itself with a lean, joyless professionalism. Simon West takes the celebrated twenty-three minute opening of Fred Walton's 1979 original and stretches it across a full feature, a decision critics met with an eight percent approval rating. The premise is unchanged. A teenage babysitter, here Camilla Belle's Jill, is menaced by phone calls that originate from inside the very house she is guarding. It is a machine for generating suspense, and the machine runs.

What the film declines to do is carry any social freight. The Mandrakis household is wealthy, but its money is set dressing, not a target. The cast is largely white, with Tessa Thompson appearing briefly as a friend, and nobody pauses to remark on it. A female protagonist anchors the story, which is standard slasher architecture, not an argument. Racial politics, environmental dread, class resentment, body-image discourse, neurodivergent interiority, historical revision: none of these find a home. The picture has no interest in sermonizing, and we should be grateful for small mercies.

This is horror from a less self-conscious era, or perhaps merely an incurious one. It opened at number one, recouped its modest budget, and was panned. Its sins are aesthetic, its virtues mechanical. For the cultural archivist, there is almost nothing to catalogue beyond the spectacle of a studio inflating a short film's best idea into ninety minutes of hallway creeping. We file it accordingly, under the heading of films that ask nothing of us and receive nothing in return.
