Why it received this score

The film arrives from France and Belgium, adapting Laurent Binet's HHhH, and sets about the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich with the grim efficiency of a staff report. Jason Clarke plays Heydrich as a careerist, a man who marries into the party and rises through paperwork and violence. Cédric Jimenez directs with visual assurance, and the period detail is thorough. The film has no interest in addressing the viewer. It simply shows us the Wannsee Conference and the Einsatzgruppen and trusts us to be appalled.

This is a war picture of the old school, and that is mostly a compliment. Rosamund Pike gives Lina Heydrich a chilly, watchful presence, but the screenplay never turns her into a thesis about women in the Third Reich; she is a historical person in a historical marriage. The Czech resistance fighters are Czech and the Nazis are German, cast accordingly, and nobody pauses to explain what we are supposed to feel about any of it. The moral weight sits in the subject matter, where it belongs, not in the dialogue. It follows the documented record and leaves the interpretation to us.

The trouble is structural. The Hollywood Reporter's observation that this is essentially two films of an hour each is fair; the Heydrich ascent and the Prague operation never quite fuse. The result is competent, somber, occasionally gripping, and content to be a thriller about an atrocity instead of a sermon about one. It aims to disturb and does. The final stand in the crypt retains its terrible force, and the film never once stops to congratulate its audience for watching. A picture that respects us enough to withhold the lesson. Rare, and welcome.
