Why it received this score

Nobody 2 arrives as a sequel to a film about a mild-mannered assassin, and it conducts itself with the cultural ambition of a man who simply wants to enjoy his vacation. Hutch Mansell takes his family to a Wisconsin theme park, punches a few people, loses part of a pinky finger, and burns down a drug warehouse. The film is an action thriller, and it knows this. There is no message waiting in the wings, no sermon tucked into the third act. The villains are criminals and a corrupt sheriff, not a metaphor for late capitalism. When the park explodes at the end, it explodes because someone lit a fuse, not because the filmmakers wished to comment on anything.

The cast includes RZA, Colin Salmon, and John Ortiz, and their presence registers as ordinary ensemble building instead of a statement of intent. Nobody pauses to explain them or their backgrounds. Connie Nielsen returns as Becca, and she gets more to do this time, including a late moment where she shoots the crime boss in the eye with a dart. Sharon Stone plays that crime boss, a woman with money and men and no interest in subtext. This is a marginally more active role for the wife than the first film offered, though the film never argues a point about it. The women are simply permitted to participate in the violence.

Every other modern sensibility is absent. No character discusses identity or history or the climate. No body is celebrated for its shape. No mind is diagnosed. The film does not lecture, does not revise, does not redistribute. It is a man, his family, and a great many people who chose the wrong theme park. We are left with a clean specimen: a sequel that wants only to be a sequel, and largely succeeds.
