Why it received this score

Etan Cohen's Holmes & Watson takes the world's most adapted detective and hands him to Will Ferrell, a decision that history has now had ample time to weigh. As a vehicle for progressive social consciousness, the film is close to inert. The cast is overwhelmingly white and British; Rebecca Hall and Kelly Macdonald appear in supporting roles, and their presence registers as casting convenience, not as an argument about who gets to stand in front of a camera in 2018. There is no LGBTQ content of any kind, no environmental concern, no critique of wealth or class, and no interest in the body as anything but a target for a gag.

Small flickers exist, and they are faint. A red hat reading Make England Great Again drifts through a scene, gesturing at nationalist sentiment without engaging race or politics in any serious way. Dr. Grace Hart practices medicine in Victorian London, a mild anachronism played for a shrug, and Millie's feral-woman routine turns out to be a calculated performance for manipulating men, a joke that could have been a feminist observation and is instead a punchline about howling. Holmes's eccentricity is buffoonery, not a portrait of a mind that works differently.

The film parodies the Sherlock Holmes canon; it does not revise history, and it preaches nothing. Its sermonizing instinct is absent entirely, which for a comedy of this vintage is arguably its single most admirable quality. The remainder is a ninety-minute exercise in puerile gags, a Golden Raspberry champion, and a cautionary artifact about the limits of two funny men and a budget. We classify it, and we move on.
