Why it received this score

Baltasar Kormákur's Adrift concerns Tami Oldham, a young sailor who survives a hurricane in the Pacific and spends forty-one days coaxing a broken yacht toward Hawaii. The film is based on a true story, adapted from Tami Oldham Ashcraft's memoir, and it treats her ordeal with the straightforward reverence such material invites. Shailene Woodley carries most of the running time alone on screen, and she is credible as a woman who repairs sails, rations food, and refuses to die. The romance wrapped around her is serviceable and slightly soggy.

Here we encounter the film's only brush with contemporary social consciousness, and it is a faint brush. A capable woman takes charge of her own rescue, which is worth a few points on the ledger, but the film presents this as biography, not argument. Tami's competence is a fact of the story, not a thesis about the patriarchy. Nobody delivers a speech. Nobody explains what her survival means for women everywhere. The mid-film reveal, that the injured Richard aboard the boat was a hallucination all along, lands as a narrative trick instead of a statement.

The remaining categories sit empty, and the emptiness is honest. The cast is small and white. There is no racial commentary, no queer subtext, no climate sermonizing about the storm, and no indictment of the wealthy yacht owners who paid Richard ten thousand dollars for the delivery. The hurricane is weather. The rich couple is a plot device. No character is on a journey of body acceptance or neurodivergent self-discovery, and history is left unrevised. The film wants only to make us sad about a drowned man and relieved about a living woman. It succeeds at both, quietly, and asks nothing more of us.
