Snow White (2025)

Directed by Marc Webb

Yes — Snow White is woke, scoring 60 out of 100 on our wokeness meter.

The 2025 Snow White arrives with the solemn weight of a studio attempting to update a 1937 animated landmark without offending anyone, which is itself a kind of impossible assignment.

Consciousness Markers

🎭
Representation Casting88

Rachel Zegler, an actress of Latina descent, was cast as a character literally named for skin 'as white as snow,' a deliberate color-blind casting choice that drew international controversy. The supporting cast is notably diverse, including Tituss Burgess, George Salazar, and Ansu Kabia.

👑
Feminist Agenda82

The remake explicitly reframes Snow White as a 'fearless' leader rather than a romantic prize, replaces 'Someday My Prince Will Come' with a self-actualization anthem, and removes her servitude to the dwarfs. Zegler publicly derided the original's prince as a stalker, and the film centers her destiny as a ruler.

📢
Lecture Energy48

The film carries a steady stream of messaging about inner beauty, kindness, female leadership, and the modernization of a 'backwards' classic, with the star publicly lecturing on the original's problems. The moralizing is present but woven into a family musical rather than delivered as a screed.

✊
Racial Consciousness30

The film's racial dimension is almost entirely a casting phenomenon rather than a narrative theme; the story itself does not engage with race or racial justice. The diverse ensemble exists without the script commenting on it.

💗
Body Positivity30

The film reframes 'the fairest one of all' as a matter of kindness and inner beauty rather than physical appearance, and Disney consulted the dwarfism community to avoid reinforcing stereotypes in reimagining the seven magical beings. This is a mild body-image reframing rather than a sustained theme.

💰
Eat the Rich28

The Evil Queen impoverishes her subjects and conscripts them into the royal guard, and Snow White rallies the commoners and guards against her tyranny. This is a class-flavored uprising against a monarch, though framed as generic tyranny rather than a critique of capitalism.

🏳️‍🌈
LGBTQ+ Themes0

No LGBTQ+ characters, relationships, or themes appear in the film or its production discourse.

🌱
Climate Crusade0

There is no environmental or climate theme in the film.

🧠
Neurodivergence0

Dopey is non-speaking, but the film does not frame this through a neurodivergence lens or engage with neurodiversity as a theme.

📖
Revisionist History0

The film reimagines a fairy tale, not a historical event, so the revisionist-history marker does not apply.

Why it received this score

The 2025 Snow White arrives with the solemn weight of a studio attempting to update a 1937 animated landmark without offending anyone, which is itself a kind of impossible assignment. Rachel Zegler plays the princess with conviction, and her casting gives the enterprise its most charged cultural dimension. A character named for snow-white skin is now embodied by a Latina actress, a choice that provoked more discourse than the film's actual storytelling. The supporting cast is diverse, though the script rarely comments on that diversity. Race exists here as casting news, not narrative argument.

The larger project is a feminist renovation. Snow White is no longer waiting for a prince. She is fearless, destined to rule, and equipped with a self-actualization ballad in place of the old romantic standard. The dwarfs become magical beings, and the heroine is not their maid. The Evil Queen starves her subjects and conscripts them, so Snow White can lead a mild populist uprising against tyranny. This is class-flavored, but it is not a sustained indictment of capital. The mirror now prizes kindness and inner beauty, which softens the fairy tale's beauty hierarchy. Disney's consultation with the dwarfism community suggests an awareness of representational harm, even if the result remains a family musical.

The film has no meaningful engagement with queerness, climate, neurodivergence, or historical revision. Dopey's silence is a character beat, not a statement. The moralizing is steady but gentle, woven into songs and princess speeches. Zegler's public critiques of the original gave the marketing a lecturing overtone, yet the film itself prefers uplift to scolding. It is a polished, anxious product: eager to be progressive, reluctant to be confrontational, and finally more concerned with being fair than being interesting.
