Why it received this score

Reptile arrives as a slow, damp New England procedural, all muted lighting and long pauses, in which Benicio del Toro plays a detective named Tom Nichols who investigates the murder of a young real estate agent and slowly discovers that the rot reaches his own department. Grant Singer directs his first feature with the patience of a man who has watched a great many 1970s crime pictures and intends to honor them. The plot involves a corrupt family, a shell company, civil asset forfeiture, and a great deal of staring into middle distance. It is competent, somber, and about forty minutes too long.

For our purposes, the film is a near-total abstention. The cast is diverse in the quiet way that competent casting often is: Ato Essandoh appears as a colleague, del Toro leads, and nobody remarks upon any of it. That is representation without commentary, which registers faintly and then fades. There are no queer characters, no feminist argument beyond Alicia Silverstone's Judy correctly identifying a car, no engagement with race as a subject, no climate anxiety, no body politics, no neurodivergent interiority, and no rewriting of history. The screenplay's critique of a real estate dynasty that launders drug money and seizes properties through legal theft is genuine, but it functions as genre machinery. Villains have always been rich. The film observes this without proposing that anyone eat them.

Above all, Reptile does not lecture. It mumbles. The camera lingers on del Toro's weary face, the score hums, and the thesis, such as it is, remains buried under atmosphere. A viewer seeking moral instruction will leave empty-handed. A viewer seeking a mood will leave satisfied, if a little tired. We classify it accordingly, with the solemnity the task demands.
