Why it received this score

One Wild Moment, a 2015 French remake of Claude Berri's 1977 film, arrives with the quiet confidence of a summer holiday drama and the cultural footprint of a sandcastle at high tide. Two old friends, Antoine and Laurent, retreat to Corsica with their teenage daughters. Louna, seventeen, seduces Laurent, eighteen-year-old Marie's father. What follows is a stew of guilt, secrecy, and a shotgun-wielding father. The film is a melodrama of desire and betrayal, content to observe its comfortable vacationers without a single glance toward representation, climate anxiety, or the redistribution of wealth. The cast is uniformly white, the concerns uniformly personal.

A teenage girl initiating sex with her father's friend might, in clumsier hands, be mistaken for a feminist statement. Here, the camera lingers on Laurent's torment, his shame, his attempts to disentangle himself. Louna's ardor is a plot engine, not a manifesto. The film grants her desire but filters it through male discomfort, which earns a faint nod of recognition and nothing more. A gay DJ appears briefly, only to be beaten by the enraged Antoine, a moment that treats queerness as collateral damage in a straight man's rampage. No affirmation there.

The film never pauses to lecture. It has no interest in neurodivergence, body positivity, or the sins of capitalism. It is a story about people behaving badly and feeling bad about it, set against picturesque Corsican backdrops. There is no revisionist history, no racial consciousness, no climate crusade. The film offers a modest, well-acted exercise in Gallic self-absorption. The sommelier of social consciousness swirls the glass, finds no bouquet, and sets it down.
