Why it received this score

A hook, a slicker, a small fishing town, and four photogenic teenagers who made a terrible decision on the Fourth of July. This is the entire architecture of I Know What You Did Last Summer, and it is enough. Kevin Williamson, fresh from the self-aware gymnastics of Scream, chose here to strip away the irony and deliver a straightforward slasher picture, adapted loosely from Lois Duncan's 1973 novel. The result is a film that asks nothing of its audience beyond a willingness to be startled, and it rewards that modest contract with competent, blue-washed dread.

The cast is young, white, and telegenic, selected by producers who openly sought actors who were beautiful but likable. Nobody in the frame exists to illustrate a social thesis. The women scream, survive, and occasionally wield the moral authority of the final girl, which is slasher grammar stretching back to 1978, not a statement of any kind. Race goes unmentioned. Class goes unmentioned. The killer's grievance is personal, rooted in a dead daughter and a hit-and-run, and the film has no interest in widening that into a parable about anything larger. Even the beauty pageant, that most loaded of small-town institutions, serves as a venue for a chase sequence and nothing more.

There is something almost restful about a picture this uninterested in instructing us. It kills its characters in the order the genre demands, spares the heroine, and closes on a shower-door scare that promises further unpleasantness. No sermon arrives. No lesson is extracted. The cultural temperature of this film is room temperature, and it has aged into a clean, uncomplicated artifact of its era. We classify it accordingly.
