Why it received this score

Batman vs. Robin arrived in 2015 as the twenty-third entry in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies line and the fifth in the connected continuity that began with Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. It was released to Blu-ray and DVD, screened once at WonderCon, and now holds a perfect approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes drawn from five reviews. Five. We take our victories where we find them.

The plot concerns Damian Wayne, a boy of roughly ten who has been trained by assassins and cannot be persuaded to stop stabbing people. Bruce responds by installing security measures around Wayne Manor, which is the parenting equivalent of building a moat. A masked figure called Talon encourages the child's worst instincts, the Court of Owls lurks in the shadows, and the Dollmaker abducts children for reasons the film treats as self-explanatory. The Court is a cabal of wealthy, powdered aristocrats who meet in a hidden chamber and speak of bloodlines. The film regards them as villains and nothing more. No critique of inherited wealth crosses its mind. The camera stays fixed on the Wayne family and their house.

The result is a lean, violent, well-animated exercise in father-son grievance, and it carries no social program whatsoever. Female characters appear, briefly, and are killed. The cast is drawn from the standard mythos. Nobody lectures. The moral questions are settled with fists and sais, which is the film's only pedagogy. Damian ends the story walking toward a monastery in the Himalayas, unhealed and unlectured. Some viewers will find this a limitation. We find it restful.
