Why it received this score

"A Perfect Day" arrives from 2015 with a rope, a corpse in a well, and a bureaucracy that will not budge. Fernando León de Aranoa sends Benicio del Toro and Tim Robbins across a pacified corner of the former Yugoslavia, where the war has ended but the paperwork has not. The premise is a small errand, and the film treats it with the gravity of a military campaign. The humor is dry, the pacing is slack, and the whole enterprise plays like a Balkan M*A*S*H with fewer jokes and more mud.

What the film declines to do is more interesting than what it does. Its cultural awareness is period-specific and regional, drawn from the actual ethnic conflict of the Yugoslav Wars, not from any modern identity framework. The cast is international, and the Balkan roles go to Balkan performers, though this reads as geography rather than an agenda. The two women, Sophie and Katya, were called disappointingly thin by reviewers at the time, and the criticism holds. They exist to be observed by the men and to complicate the road trip. There is no feminist argument here, no LGBTQ subtext, no environmental sermon, no meditation on wealth or the body or the neurodivergent mind. The film's target is the aid industry itself: the UN, the NGOs, the well-meaning outsiders who cannot find a rope.

Where the film comes closest to sermonizing, it pulls back. The satire is aimed at institutional paralysis and the vanity of humanitarian machinery, and it stays there. No lecture follows. The audience is trusted to notice the absurdity without being told which conclusion to draw. It is a modest achievement, and a quiet one. The film observes, shrugs, and drives on. In an era that prefers its cinema to arrive with instructions, that restraint is close to a novelty.

Synopsis

Somewhere in the Balkans, 1995. A team of aid workers must solve an apparently simple problem in an almost completely pacified territory that has been devastated by a cruel war, but some of the local inhabitants, the retreating combatants, the UN forces, many cows and an absurd bureaucracy will not cease to put obstacles in their way.
