Vacation Friends (2021)

Vacation Friends is a buddy comedy that assembles a diverse cast and then lets it behave like a normal ensemble. That is a modest virtue, and the film does not advertise it. The interracial friendship and the Black family at its center are presented as ordinary facts, which keeps the representation from feeling like a casting memo. The screenplay does not engage racial tension in any substantive way. A critic at Salon faulted it for selling a colorblind fantasy, and that complaint is fair, though the film seems less interested in fantasy than in avoiding the topic entirely.

The same-sex reveal in the third act arrives as a shock beat, a comic detour that is not explored as an LGBTQ story. Female characters orbit the men and the wedding logistics. No feminist argument is mounted. The film's social consciousness is mostly a matter of casting and a mild plea for friendship, delivered without a lecture. Its message about not judging others has the weight of a greeting card.

Elsewhere the cupboard is bare. There is no environmental crusade, no anti-capitalist anger, no body positivity subplot, no neurodivergent representation, and no revisionist history. The comedy is rowdy, the stakes are marital, and the cultural agenda is nearly nonexistent. A mild homily about friendship is the closest the film comes to sermonizing. The result is a streaming crowd-pleaser with good chemistry and a low tolerance for lectures. We can respect that, even as we note the absence of anything worth classifying.
