Nosferatu (2024)

Directed by Robert Eggers

No — Nosferatu is not woke, scoring 15 out of 100 on our wokeness meter.

Robert Eggers returns to the crypt with Nosferatu, a remake of the 1922 silent film that was itself a remix of Dracula, so the lineage is complicated and the copyright was not.

Consciousness Markers

👑
Feminist Agenda35

Ellen is the emotional and psychic center and ultimately the active savior, and the film engages with hysteria and female desire, but it does not advance an explicit feminist argument.

🎭
Representation Casting10

The cast is overwhelmingly white European with no colorblind or inclusive casting agenda; Emma Corrin's presence is natural rather than a stated representation theme.

📢
Lecture Energy10

Von Franz explains occult lore and plague mechanics, but the film is atmospheric rather than preachy about social issues.

🏳️‍🌈
LGBTQ+ Themes0

There are no LGBTQ+ themes or same-sex relationships; the central obsession is heterosexual and supernatural.

✊
Racial Consciousness0

The Roma characters and period Eastern European setting provide no racial commentary or consciousness.

🌱
Climate Crusade0

The plague and rats are supernatural horror elements, not a climate allegory.

💰
Eat the Rich0

The real estate transaction and bourgeois comforts are plot mechanics, not a critique of capitalism or wealth.

💗
Body Positivity0

Orlok is a decayed corpse and the film's bodily imagery is horrific, not body-positive.

🧠
Neurodivergence0

Ellen's seizures and somnambulism are framed as supernatural possession and historical hysteria, not modern neurodivergence.

📖
Revisionist History0

This is a fictional remake of a vampire tale, not a revisionist account of real history.

Why it received this score

Robert Eggers returns to the crypt with Nosferatu, a remake of the 1922 silent film that was itself a remix of Dracula, so the lineage is complicated and the copyright was not. The film is gorgeous the way a frozen lake is gorgeous: desaturated, deliberate, and fatal if you linger. Lily-Rose Depp plays Ellen Hutter, whose childhood prayer for company reached something in the dark and has been paying dividends in nightmares ever since. Bill Skarsgård's Count Orlok is a decayed folk vampire with a mustache and a reconstructed Dacian accent, a choice that suggests the production hired at least one linguist and nobody willing to say no.

Ellen sits at the center of the picture, seizing, sleepwalking, and finally choosing to end the plague herself. The film circles hysteria and female desire with obvious interest, though it stops short of argument, content to let the men in the room diagnose her badly while she does the actual work. That is the extent of the social program. The rats are rats. The plague is plague. The real estate transaction is a real estate transaction, and nobody pauses to denounce the market.

Willem Dafoe's occult professor supplies the lore and the sunlight loophole, which is the closest the film comes to a sermon, and even that sermon is about vampires. The rest is atmosphere, craft, and a great many trained rats. Eggers has made a handsome, cold, serious object, and it wants nothing from us but our attention. Refreshing, in its way.
