Why it received this score

Night Swim arrives in the traditional early-January dumping ground, a Blumhouse production about a retired baseball player whose multiple sclerosis goes into remission the moment he starts swimming laps in his new backyard pool. The pool, we learn, is fed by an ancient pagan spring guarded by a malevolent entity with a taste for child sacrifice. This is the sort of premise a five-minute short film can sustain and a ninety-eight-minute feature cannot, and the critics have said so at length. The movie is not good. That is a separate matter from the question before us.

What interests this office is the film's ideological silence. The Waller family is a nuclear unit in a suburban house, and their crisis is medical and financial, not political. Minority performers appear in supporting roles as doctors and neighbors and are never asked to announce themselves. Ray's illness is treated as a degenerative disease with a grim prognosis, not a platform. Nobody delivers a speech about the water table, the housing market, or the sins of the past. The ancient spring is simply ancient, a gothic fairy tale undercurrent, and the film has no interest in converting it into a lesson about resource extraction.

There is a genuine emotional layer here, a family trying to hold together while a father disappears into his own body and then into something worse. It plays as drama, not as instruction. No character turns to the camera to explain what we should think. No casting decision carries a thesis. The film wants to frighten us with a swimming pool and largely fails, but it fails honestly, on its own terms, without a single lecture. For a 2024 studio horror release, that restraint is nearly exotic. We score it accordingly: a clean sheet, and a shrug.
