Why it received this score

Jungle 2 Jungle arrives from 1997 as a Disney remake of a French comedy, which is to say it arrives already twice removed from any original inspiration. Tim Allen plays a New York commodities broker who travels to Venezuela for a divorce and returns with a thirteen-year-old son, Mimi-Siku, raised in a tribal village. The boy brings a blowgun, a tarantula named Maitika, and a quest to steal fire from the Statue of Liberty. Martin Short shrieks. A Russian caviar dealer tortures a man in a suburban living room. Gene Siskel named it the worst film of 1997, and the critical consensus has not softened in the intervening decades.

For our purposes, the film is a clean specimen. The cast is a wall of white faces, and the half-indigenous boy is played by a white teenager, a decision the production made without apparent hesitation or comment. The tribal material exists to fuel slapstick. No argument is advanced about indigenous life, sovereignty, or history. The women orbit the men and dispense disapproval. The protagonist's profession, commodities trading, is treated as a job and not as an indictment, and the villains are caviar smugglers, which is a crime against fish and not against capital. There is no climate anxiety here, no body politics, no neurodivergent interiority, no romantic configuration beyond the heterosexual default. The film lectures no one. Its only pedagogy involves a dart.

The result is a zero across every marker we track, a rare vacuum. This is not a film that failed to keep pace with modern sensibilities. It predates them entirely. The tribal stereotyping would today draw fire of a different kind, but it is played for laughs and carries no countervailing social program. Whatever this is, it is not that. The classification is complete. The film remains, as Ebert suggested, far too mediocre to be terrible.
