Why it received this score

Didier arrives from 1997, a French comedy in which a Labrador belonging to a film journalist named Annabelle is deposited with her brother Jean-Pierre, a football agent in the middle of a bad week, and then wakes as a man played by Alain Chabat. The man keeps the psychology of the dog. He lopes, he pants, he regards a tennis ball with the devotion of a monk. Chabat won a César for his debut here, and the film reached number one at the French box office, which tells us what audiences wanted that January: a broad, generous farce with a dog at its center.

We have examined this specimen closely and found nothing of the modern sensibility inside it. The cast is a standard ensemble of familiar French comic faces, assembled for laughs, not for demographic accounting. The women, Isabelle Gélinas and Josiane Balasko among them, get personalities and jokes, yet the screenplay mounts no argument about the condition of women. Football club politics supply the friction. Nobody dismantles capitalism. The dog premise is a fantasy of transformation and carries no message about the mind. There is no climate anxiety, no historical revision, no sermon to endure.

What remains is a comedy that wants only to make a room laugh, and mostly does. Its pleasures are modest and unimproving. A dog, in human form, solves a football crisis and repairs a romance. That is the whole of its program. We classify it as inert on every index we keep, and we record this without disappointment. Not every vintage needs to lecture us. Some simply pour, and let the evening proceed.
