Paranormal Activity arrives from a pre-social consciousness era, crafted in 2007 when the specific constellation of progressive cultural markers we now scrutinize had not yet coalesced into the recognizable form they would assume by the mid-2010s. This is a film concerned with supernatural dread and domestic anxiety, not the articulation of contemporary social awareness. The female protagonist, Katie, serves primarily as a vessel for horror rather than as a vessel for any particular ideological statement. Her boyfriend Micah functions as the film's moral antagonist, his skepticism and recording obsession driving the narrative toward catastrophe, yet this dynamic emerges from genre conventions rather than any conscious engagement with gender politics. The film's found-footage aesthetic and minimalist approach leave little room for the kind of explicit social commentary that would characterize a genuinely progressive work of the current era.
